What is a food blogger doing posting about electrical outlets? People chuckle when I mention that I’m remodeling our house. My wife and I purchased a ‘house with character’ as she would say – my translation is a, “100 year old house of trouble.” We closed on the house February 1st and I have been hard at work ever since to bring the house into this century.
My wife and I have always been mindful of our budget, so we’ve always been big DIYers. On closing day back in February, we started tearing out the bathroom. It was a mess. We quickly realized we were going to have many issues. The walls had no insulation and the electrical was knob and tube. My dad remodeled his house all by himself, pre-internet! I found myself relying on him often throughout the process. But I also found myself looking for helpful tools that kept my project moving forward even when dad wasn’t around. After all, I can’t ask him to come over EVERY NIGHT.
One such tool that has really helped me along this journey is the DIYZ app. (Download it: Apple App Store) It has a large library of DIY projects, providing DIYers like me with step-by-step guides and segmented videos to tackle my home improvement projects. The project videos are completed by trusted professionals. Even if you have a question about your project you can talk to a Pro Advisor for FREE with the Pro Advice feature.
My house is a total construction zone. Not only is the bathroom getting remodeled, but every electrical outlet upstairs needs replacing and we are turning the basement into a food studio. We added new outlets and rewired the entire house. During this process, I was at my local home improvement store and stumbled upon something that I just loved! USB and night light outlets. Charging your phone at night and having it plugged directly into a USB outlet, leaving the other plugs free for a night light and whatever else you might want is fantastic. Being able to have a night light by the stairs is great. Now my 7 year old isn’t afraid of the dark and my wife doesn’t worry about falling when she’s going down stairs in the dark.
However, working with electricity can be intimidating and a little scary. But the DIYZ app makes it easy to understand and approachable. The app also recommends the proper tools and materials needed to complete each project and even provide the option to purchase everything via Amazon without leaving the app. Who doesn’t LOVE Prime?? The poor UPS guy visits my house daily.
In a single afternoon, once all of the outlets were rewired, I switched out 11 old outlets for new tamper resistant ones, wired two new USB outlets and 3 new night light outlets. DIYZ walked me through these projects, step-by step with clear segmented video instructions the entire way.
This app is incredible. I have already used it so many times I’ve lost count. I’ve saved money when we installed a new dimmer switch in the bedroom, added a new fan, and switched out a light fixture. All these projects were easy to follow and looked like they were completed professionally when they were done. I’m installing a new range hood in our basement where our new kitchen studio will be, and there’s a tutorial for that too. If you need plumbing help like I do, the app also has plenty of projects. If you saw my bathroom you would definitely say it needs the help.
I like tools that help me and my family save money and live better. Being a DIY dad is something I’m proud of. I get to learn new skills that help me make my home, my castle. It may not be perfect yet, but I work every weekend to make it our Camelot. As you can see, we have a big vision for our home. Our blog plays a major role in our lives, but we can’t spend thousands, we use resources like DIYZ to help us learn, create and finish our projects on schedule and on budget.
