Fried Green Tomatoes
Recipe type: Side Dish
Serves: 2-3
  • 1 lb of Green tomatoes
  • 1 egg for egg wash
  • 1 tbs of milk or water for egg wash
  • 1 cup of Cornmeal
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • About an inch of oil for the pan
  1. Pre heat oil in pan until the end of a wooden spoon would sizzle.
  2. Thinly slice tomatoes, either with knife or on lowest setting on a mandolin.
  3. Lightly Salt and pepper the tomatoes on both sides, then run the tomatoes through the egg wash and then through the cornmeal.
  4. I also season the cornmeal lightly with salt, pepper, and if I'm in a spicy mood something with a kick.
  5. When the oil is hot, place the tomatoes into the pan
  6. After about 5 - 7 minutes, turn over tomato slices and let the other side fry.
  7. Some people like to fry the cold side for a few minutes extra (i do personally for extra crisp)
  8. Sprinkle with salt and/or tabasco (to taste)
  9. Place them on a paper towl and let cool
  10. Best served warm.
